Age of Champions Documentary Screening
Age of Champions is a feature-length documentary celebrating the charm and active spirit of seven athletes and their burning desire for gold at the 2009 Senior Games. The screening will be FREE and will include a wellness expo and Q&A session with the filmmakers after the show.

Ohio Senior Olympics Hall of Fame Induction
The Ohio Senior Olympics Hall of Fame began in 2007 to recognize the accomplishments of the many athletes competing in and promoting Senior Olympics at the local, regional, state and national level. A new class is inducted into the Hall of Fame each year via nominations from among the many hundreds of athletes competing in Senior Olympics.

Cleveland Senior Walk

Sponsored by the Cleveland Department of Public Health, Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging, MetroHealth, YMCA Clevelanders in Motion, Quicken Loans Arena and the Enterprise Foundation.

The Cleveland Senior Walk is a free community walk to encourage health and physical activity for all! All registrants receive a t-shirt and healthy snacks and are encouraged to participate in health screenings and activities before and after the walk. The walk course will be a loop so walkers can walk as much or as little as they are able.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will be on hand to trade out traditional mercury thermometers for brand new electronic thermometers. Bring your old thermometer in a plastic bag to the walk, and receive a FREE digital thermometer at the NEORSD table. The National Institute of Aging and National Institutes of Health recently released a science-based exercise program that includes a written guide in English and Spanish, an exercise video, an interactive website, and more. Go4LifeTM offers specific exercises, motivational tips, success stories, and free materials to help older adults (50+) get ready, start exercising, and keep going. As part of the Year of Vitality, a two-hour introductory session will be offered, where participants will be walked through the materials and have the opportunity to ask questions.

 

Go4Life programs will be offered at community centers, senior centers and senor residential care centers in and around Northeast Ohio. Once scheduled, Go4Life sessions will be listed here with information on how to register. Programs will begin in October, 2012.

Nutrition for Active Adults

In partnership with

 

Nutrition for Active Adults will be a FREE series of six monthly nutrition classes that will include speakers, cooking demos, and interactive cooking lessons.  Speakers will focus on farm-to-table, understanding nutrition labels, easy recipes, creatively using fresh fruits and vegetables, and more.  (Tentative Dates: January – June, 2013)

 

 

Cuyahoga County Public Library Author Series

In partnership with the Cuyahoga County Public Library, a FREE series of author events and book signings will be held in Northeast Ohio on topics relating to nutrition and healthy lifestyles for older adults. Confirmed speakers at this time include:

·         Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 2pm at the Strongsville Library
Dr. Steven Nissen & Dr. Marc Gillinov, Heart 411

Other speakers will be identified as needed, and the events will be held at various locations, based on size and date. 

 

 

Year of Vitality Series with The City Club of Cleveland

The City Club of Cleveland will host a series of talks focused on active and healthy aging, preventive medicine, or similar topics featuring nationally-recognized speakers. Exact dates and speakers are to be determined, and confirmed speakers are listed below:

·         Dr. Michael Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer at Cleveland Clinic (May 10, 2013)

 

Tickets for this event can be purchased directly through The City Club of Cleveland.

 

 

Financial Fitness

In partnership with

 

Four FREE financial literacy classes have been developed to meet the needs of older adults. These classes will be offered at a variety of locations around Northeast Ohio during the Year of Vitality:

·         Set Your Financial Sights (Goal Setting)

·         Keeping Score (Importance of Record Keeping)

·         An Ounce of Prevention (Recognizing Predatory Lending Practices)

·         Identity Theft (How to Prevent and Recover)

 

Programs will begin in October, 2012, and registration will be available through this website.

NORTHEAST OHIO SENIOR GAMES

Annual event for athletes over 50 that will include both recreational and competitive games to cater to athletes of all abilities. The event would be an ongoing legacy of hosting the National Senior Games in Cleveland and would be managed locally through the three Area Agencies on Aging. More information to come!
