WEATHER & MEDICAL:

We are very conscious of the fact that Houston can be hot, sunny, and frequently humid in the month of June.

Here are some things to consider to combat the heat and sun:

1.    For the first time in Games history, tennis and archery will be held indoors, in the air conditioned George R. Brown Convention Center. Horseshoes, shuffleboard and badminton, frequently played outdoors, will also be inside the Center.

2.    Earlier start times will limit the exposure of both athletes and spectators during the hottest part of the day (2 to 6 p.m.). Many outdoor sports will begin as early as 7 a.m.

3.    There will be an ample number of hydration tents and shaded areas for athletes and spectators. We, along with our facility and sports specific management teams, will run events as efficiently as possible to limit exposure to the elements – keeping athletes under tents before marshalling them to their starting areas, and having more shaded areas available after competition to shorten the cool down process.

4.    Purchase and wear sunscreen and appropriate eye protection. Hats and umbrellas are effective sun blockers.

5.    In general, Houston is the most air conditioned city in Texas, if not the entire country. Take full advantage of that whenever possible.

6.    Drink plenty of fluids as often as possible. Water and ice will be available at all venues. Take advantage of them.
